GURU is a Hindu term for a teacher. It is also defined as "A trusted counselor and adviser; a mentor". Another dictionary adds that a Guru may be a recognized leader in a field.
From a historical perspective (this is a history site after all) this term was commonly applied to spiritual teachers and leaders. It implied that the person in question (the Guru) not only instructed his students ot disciples, but also maintained a close relationship with them. He would be their guide as the explored the world and the life around them.
With the advent of our modern, technologically focused world the term Guru has come to mean something slightly different. A Guru is seen not only as a teacher, but also as a leader in their field (particularly in business). They are individuals that strive to develop their skills, knowledge and talents and use them to assist others in their field of expertise.
This site tries to incorporate all aspects of what it means to be a Guru. It promotes communication between students and teachers. It provides a forum for teachers to discuss the various aspects of their teaching which they have found successful, and to provide guidance for new teachers who are developing their teaching style. Finally, it encourages the idea that the most effective history teachers are those who are leaders and experts in their field.
The History Guru is designed to be a teacher and a leader - both for students and for teachers!
